How to Create a Xerox Poster Effect in Photoshop

hard mix knockout masking movie poster smart objects video tutorial youtube

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create an old xerox copy effect. We'll use this to recreate the character poster for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. We'll explore the Hard Mix blend mode and also how to use the Knockout feature in blending options to create smart-object based masks.

While the original poster uses the font Anultra Slab Regular, there's a free Google font that looks very similar—Alfa Slab One—which you can download here.

Here are the colors used in the tutorial for easy reference:

  • Beige Paper background - #E4E0D1
  • Red background - #942F25
  • Green background - #227F75
  • Purple/Blue Background - #297796
